Vertical and horizontal are fundamental orientations in human
life. We oscillate between them daily, and over the course of a
lifespan. They are also a hallmark of Frank Lloyd Wright's oeuvre.
He often emphasizes one to defy the other. The resulting tension
defines his work, at Fallingwater and elsewhere. It also embodies
the essential challenge of architecture meeting the landscape to
make place. Through this talk, Andrew will explore some of the
implications of these efforts at Fallingwater, in architecture
and in his work with students at The Charter High School for
Architecture and Design (ChAD).
